Yes, the father of the groom or anyone at a wedding should avoid drinking excessively. Wine or alcoholic drinks are common at weddings but everyone is expected to drink moderately. Things wouldn’t turn out so great if the father of the groom ends up babbling or talking nonsense on his speech because he’s gone tipsy. It will be so embarrassing not just for him, but for the groom, and his family as well. If you know that you have a problem with alcohol or if you have a history of alcoholism, I think it will be best to avoid having even a single glass on that day.
